Did you know that over 50% of brain injuries are preventable?
Like many others, I knew very little about brain injuries, and the potential long lasting impact one can have until I found myself with membership in the Traumatic Brain Injury club. There’s no expiry date to this membership.
I am grateful for the progress I’ve made in overcoming the many challenges that I was left with although every now and then memories of the some of the darker moments in my journey come to my mind. My volunteer activities with those who have an acquired a brain injury can sometimes take me back to my months of rehabilitation where I was relearning how to walk, read and talk.

I now find I have a great interest in advocating to raise awareness to prevent others from going through a similar experience. There are approximately 160,000 new members to the Traumatic Brain Injury club each year in Canada and in my books that is 160,000 too many. With summer in full swing I know it’s likely you are making the most of the warmer temperatures and spending time outdoors taking part in various activities.
A very popular warm weather activity in the province of Alberta where I live is off highway vehicle (OHV) usage in the back country.
Alberta tops all provinces in Canada as having the highest sales of OHV’s in the country!
As fun as this can be, it has the potential of having a not so fun aspect to it as I found out first hand when I was thrown from one and sustained my TBI. Tips on how you and your loved ones can practice safety when riding your off highway vehicle can be found here.
I wish you a very enjoyable and accident free summer!
