Each year the brain gets celebrated throughout the world during brain awareness week in an effort to increase the awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. Events will be held in countries throughout the world and you can find out what’s happening in your area by viewing the calendar on the Dana Foundation as well as in your local media channels. The Dana Foundation is organization that supports brain research through grants and educational programs and the here you can also find a variety of brain educational resources for all ages, whether it be games for children or articles that provide interesting information about the wonders of the mind and how the brain works.
The brain is the most complex organ in your body and it consumes the highest amount of the total energy, roughly 25 watts, which is enough to illuminate a light bulb!
This power house contains approximately 85 billion neurons and it’s faster and more powerful than a supercomputer – downloading, processing and reacting to information coming from your eyes, ears, skin, tongue and nose.
There can be little doubt, that the human brain is truly an incredible body organ that requires maximum care to keep all vital body processes running smoothly.
Did you know….
Food preferences first develop in the womb! Studies have shown that if moms drink carrot juice during pregnancy, infants are much more likely to prefer the flavor of carrots. So if you’ve ever wondered why you have always loved a certain food, you may not have to look any further than to your Mom!
Your workplace environment can have an impact on your brain function! This study showed that learning new skills and being challenged in the workplace results in stronger cognitive skills which translates into long term cognitive wellbeing.
These are just two examples of what I learned about the brain after spending a few minutes on brainfacts.org.
The choice is yours on if you want to devote this one week in looking at how you can keep your greatest asset in optimal health or if you want to focus on the health of your brain each and every day.
