In the early 90’s the song things that make you go hmmm by C+C Music Factory set a trend as it climbed up the billboard on the America top 100 chart. This song, inspired by Arsenio Hall pondering random thoughts on a long road trip that he referred to as “things that make you go hmmmm…”, opened up your mind of the listener to begin questioning things.
A few years ago Entertainment Weekly sat down with Arsenio, eager to know what’s making him go hmmmm today.
You may be surprised by his response as it’s likely something that’s also made you go hmmm.
“It’s just one of those things that makes you go hmmm?”

Question: One of your recurring bits on the show was “Things That Make You Go Hmmm,” which begat a C&C Music Factory song. What was the last thing that made you go hmmm?
Arsenio Hall’s response:
“You ever walk in someone’s bathroom and you put lotion in your hand and then like an hour later you see this Jergens booger, this lotion nugget? With technology – we have Purell wipes, we have amazing things at our beck and call – there has to be a way to get rid of that little Jergens nugget thing. It’s not like I hadn’t been in that room for a few years. A day later there’s a lotion booger. What happens is that thing ends up on your face or your neck and you’re sitting at dinner, and somebody says, “Hey, what’s that on your face?” and you have to convince them that it’s a hard piece of lotion and they never believe that. Hmmm…. There has to be solution in 2013 to the Jergens nugget.”
Below are three things that are making me go hmmm these days:
1. Meet Shabani, Japan’s newest sex symbol. With dark hair, striking features, muscular body and the intensity of his stare, it’s no wonder women of all ages are wanting to see him! And to do so they head to the zoo as Shabani is a lowland gorilla!
2. You may want to think twice about battling with a mantis shrimp, you could lose an eye! This crustacean packs a punch that may just put yours to shame.
3. Did you know that honey can never expire? It leaves me wondering why the jar that I bought a couple of months ago has both a best before and expiry date on it.
